Winter Wonderlands: Dispatches from a Wildlife Photographer

TLDR SECTION:

Hungarian partridges in Alberta. I had been hunting grouse in the area, and I had seen these birds around, but I didn’t have any luck with them. I was walking in the snow, and I heard them coming. I looked up and they were just crossing the sky. I was able to get a few shots off before they were gone. “I like the way they are all looking away from me. It’s like they are saying, ‘Hey, I know you’re there, but I’m not going to look at you.’ That’s the way I feel about a lot of my subjects.”

Don Jones left Chicago in 1982 and has since ventured to some of the most spectacular places in North America to observe, admire and photograph wildlife for magazines. He recently returned from a trip through Montana, Alberta, the Yukon and Alaska, documenting upland fowl, waterfowl and big game hunting. Jones’ photos capture moments of wildlife in the wild, from a young bison riding through a snow storm in Montana to a pair of bald eagles fighting along the Chilkat River in Alaska. His photos also feature more peaceful scenes, such as a Montana whitetail looking at a nearby doe and a rough-legged hawk taking a break from hunting vole. Jones has also captured chaotic moments, such as dozens of surprised mallards bursting out of a field of silage corn and a Canadian bull elk getting loose. Finally, he has photographed Hungarian partridges crossing the snow, all looking away from him.

I had been shooting grouse, and then I heard this call and I thought, ‘That doesn’t sound like a grouse.’ I got out of the truck and there were four Huns just walking across the snow in front of me. I had my camera with me and I was able to get a couple of shots. I love it when they go into the snow like that. They look so regal. “I think of this shot as a kind of cold shoulder. I mean, I was there, but they didn’t really care. They had their own agenda and were just walking away. I just love the way they look.”
